DStv Now gets new features after ditching Flash
Thanks to dropping Flash as its streaming video player, MultiChoice has been able to build new features into its DStv Now platform.
“All DStv Premium customers who stream content through the new native HTML video player will enjoy the convenience of never having to download another plugin again,” said MultiChoice.
“Customers can watch their favourite shows instantaneously through reduced buffering and adaptive bitrates.”
Content offered by DStv can be streamed across various browsers in Windows, Mac, and Linux.
The new native player will automatically detect your connection speed and adapt the video accordingly. Stream quality can also be adjusted manually through the settings menu.
MultiChoice said it previously had to spend a lot of time encoding content for various resolutions and bitrates, but it can now produce one asset and encode and encrypt on-the-fly.
The lowest quality stream will start at 400 x 224 at 370kbps, and will be capped at 960 x 540 at 1,200kbps.
DStv Now is available through the web or through a mobile app – which is available on iOS and Android.
DStv Catch Up content and live channels are only available to DStv Premium customers with an active PVR subscription.
