Two million in less than two years

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has announced that its streaming platform, SABC Plus, has reached two million registered users.

SABC Plus first launched in November 2022. However, a revamp in July 2024 meant the streaming platform had to start again from scratch, meaning it has reached the milestone in less than two years.

“The platform has proven to not just be simply a streaming platform. It has been the rebirth of South Africa’s public service media, redefined for the digital age,” the broadcaster said in a statement.

“It stands as a beacon of endless possibilities and a foundation upon which the nation’s most inclusive digital ecosystem can flourish.”

According to SABC COO and the interim group executive sponsor for SABC Plus, Lungile Binza, the streamer’s success paints a picture for the future of public broadcasting.

“This success is a promise of a future where access to information, culture, and creativity is not limited by geography or circumstance, but shared openly across communities,” he said.

“It is a space where young people are not confined to being passive audiences, but are empowered to become creators, collaborators, and innovators.”

He added that its success reflects cultural pride and economic growth in a world that is becoming more technologically advanced.

The SABC attributes the massive growth in active registered SABC Plus users to its compelling content, including sports, and the new SABC 2 line-up, which includes a new telenovela: Primvile.

“Users can also expect more, with innovations such as gamification with SABC Plus Connect and partnerships such as the one with Microsoft South Africa, to bring digital literacy closer to the nation,” it added.

“SABC Plus will endeavour to cater to the variety of needs of its audience, through compelling content and functionalities that make the usage of SABC Plus a pleasant and fulfilling user experience.”
