DStv for R99 per month

DStv’s Access package offers nearly 100 linear local and international channels and hours of on-demand content for the same price at which it launched 16 years ago.

DStv Access slots in between the basic R30 EasyView plan and the R339 Family package. Alongside those packages, it is part of DStv’s largest segment — the Mass Market.

The bouquet was originally called DStv Lite when it launched on 30 April 2010, a day before On Digital Media’s rival TopTV launched its packages at prices ranging from R99 to R249.

Even though DStv already offered a cheaper entry point with EasyView at R20 per month, that had very limited content that was not free-to-air.

DStv Lite began with 25 video channels and 42 radio or audio stations for R99 per month on a satellite subscription. TopTV’s competing R99 plan had 23 video channels and 25 radio or audio channels.

DStv Lite was rebranded to Access in May 2013 with the addition of two new channels — Mzansi Wethu and M-Net Movies Zone.

In 2026, subscribers will pay R150 for an Access satellite subscription. However, the streaming-only version of the package is priced at the same R99 that Access launched at.

The R99 price point is an example of “charm pricing,” in which marketers trigger the left-digit effect to make a product seem cheaper.

The effect occurs in languages where text is read from left to right. A price that starts with a nine is subconsciously registered as “nine-something”.

The theory, which remains scientifically disputed, is that in the reader’s mind, the price feels closer to R90 than to R100. DStv employs the same strategy with all its other packages.

However, while studies make varying conclusions about psychological pricing, Harvard Business School professor Elie Ofek said it was used everywhere because it still works.

“It’s kind of like a negative differentiator. If you don’t do it, you start standing out, and then that creates a separate problem with customers,” Ofek stated.

For example, Premium costs R799 per month for a streaming-only option. However, the move to three-digits between R99 and R100 creates a more substantial psychological price barrier.

Despite the use of a classic pricing gimmick, the Access package does offer good value for money, especially compared to its channel line-up at launch.

As of May 2026, Access had 89 video channels — over three times more than when it launched. It also boasted over 80 radio and audio stations, around double the size of its launch selection.

Improvements in 2026

In the last few months, Canal+ has also made Access more attractive with several new channels and first-time coverage of a major sports event previously only available on more expensive bouquets.

In January 2026, DStv Access customers received three new channels that were previously only available on higher-end packages. These were Trace Ngoma, Trace Urban, and WWE.

In May, SuperSport also announced that it would broadcast and stream all 104 FIFA World Cup 2026 matches live for the first time on Access and Family.

As part of DStv’s turnaround, Canal+ also intends to subsidise decoder prices, a move likely aimed at customers at the lower end who cannot afford Internet access.

While the R99 price is attractive, the cost of the data necessary to use it will likely exceed the R51 price difference between the streaming-only and satellite options.
