Vodacom cuts call rates
Vodacom yesterday announced that it is reducing Vodacom-to-Vodacom peak call rates by 15% during the month of December. This promotion however excludes Per Second Plus and inclusive voice bundle minutes.
This offer comes two weeks after Virgin Mobile announced the launch of a new prepaid product called 99er. “The 99’er’s rate of 99 cents per minute, all day, every day, to all networks after the first five minutes of calls per day at R1.99 per minute, pre-empts the drop in the peak interconnect rate expected in February 2010. This is a reduction of over 32% on Virgin Mobile’s current prepaid tariff,” Virgin Mobile said in a press statement.
Cell C followed on 13 November with the launch of their Easy Chat All Day tariff of R1-50 which is available across all of Cell C’s package deals including Hola 7, Winc and Gospel Life. “The new R1-50 flat rate is our gift to the South African market and another victory for consumers,” said Cell C CEO Lars P Reichelt at the time.
Some observers have however indicated that these promotional packages are not related to looming interconnect rate cuts, but rather standard practice to attract new subscribers during the lucrative festive season.
