MTN pre-paid data roaming launched

Data roaming

MTN South Africa announced in a press statement on Thursday, 21 August 2014, that its pre-paid and top-up subscribers now have access to data roaming from R2 per Megabyte (MB) when travelling abroad.

“Prepaid customers have been able to roam on voice and SMS, but not on data,” said Larry Annetts, chief marketing officer for MTN South Africa.

To use pre-paid roaming, MTN said the service has to be enabled before you leave South Africa by dialling *111#.

As soon as you switch your phone on outside South Africa, MTN promises that you will receive an SMS notification with roaming information.

You will also be able to recharge with foreign vouchers by dialling *222*PIN# in the following countries:

  • Botswana (Mascom Botswana)
  • Lesotho (Econet Lesotho)
  • Mozambique (mCel Mozambique)
  • Nigeria (MTN Nigeria)
  • Rwanda (MTN Rwanda)
  • Swaziland (MTN Swaziland)
  • Uganda (MTN Uganda)
  • Zambia (MTN Zambia)
  • Zimbabwe (NetOne Zimbabwe)

Where roaming recharge is unavailable, or for subscribers who prefer not to use the service, online recharging via their bank accounts is still available, MTN said.

“Customers who travel to countries where MTN is operating will roam for R2.00 per MB, however, data roaming rates as listed on our website will apply in countries where MTN does not have a presence,” Annets said.

“Customers can also check these rates by dialling *111#.”
