Cell C job cuts loom
Cell C has started to inform some of its employees of possible retrenchments as part of a restructuring process across its business.
According to trade union Solidarity, it may affect 190 of the operator’s 1,458 employees.
“Solidarity will be representing its members at Cell C in order to reduce the impact of this retrenchment process,” it said in a statement on Friday (10 October, 2014).
Cell C, meanwhile, confirmed the move.
“Cell C can confirm that it is in the process of consultation in respect of possible retrenchments consequent to a restructuring in certain areas of the company,” the mobile operator told BusinessTech in a statement.
“At this time, and subject to consultation with the affected employees, this process could affect up to 190 employees whether through possible retrenchment or redeployment in other areas of the business,” the group said.
“We wish to confirm that the process followed is in line with the Labour Relations Act. Furthermore the company is acting responsibly and will do everything in its power to support those affected by this process,” Cell C said.
In the letters to its employees, as seen by Solidarity, Cell C said it aims to finalise the process by 31 January 2015.
“The company mentions the possibility of severance pay amounting to one week’s remuneration for every year of service. The company also states that, at this stage, very few vacant positions exist within the company that affected employees could apply for,” Solidarity said.
