New Sony Ericsson phones
Over the course of the year Sony Ericsson has launched their X10, X10 Mini and Mini Pro, as well as Vivaz and Vivaz Pro phones in South Africa.
According to the phone manufacturer South Africans can look forward to the launch of at least three more Sony Ericsson phones before the end of the year: The Spiro, X8, and Yendo.
The Spiro and Yendo are both walkman phones that have GSM/GPRS/EDGE support for 900/1800 and 850/1900 networks, limited internal phone memory (around 5MB) and support for microSD cards of up to 16GB. Both phones are also set to feature an extra 3.5mm audio jack to which a second set of headphones can be connected.
Where the phones seem to differ most is their form factor. The Spiro is a slide phone with similar controls on the front panel as the Sony Ericsson walkman phones that came before it.
The Yendo, on the other hand, has a 2.6” QVGA (320×240) TFT touch screen. Sony Ericsson describes it as their “first full touch Walkman phone.” The manufacturer has been unspecific as to whether it’s resistive or capacitive touch screen.
According to the official specifications the Sony Ericsson X8 will launch with Android Donut (1.6), sport a QVGA (320×240) TFT capacitive touchscreen and a 600MHz processor. The device is set to have up to 128MB free phone memory and support microSD cards of up to 16GB.
Sony Ericsson have said that they plan on upgrading the X10 range to Android Éclair (2.1) before the end of September (in Q3, they said) and as the upgrade coincides with the international launch of the X8 they’re still determining which version of Google’s mobile operating system the device will launch with.
