Google Project Fi network with non-expiring mobile data expanding
Google’s “network of networks” mobile service, Project Fi, is no longer invitation-only.
The company is also running a promotion, offering a $150 discount on the Nexus 5X if you buy and activate it through Project Fi.
Project Fi is a mobile virtual network operator that Google launched on 22 April 2015.
It runs on T-Mobile and Sprint in the United States, and has roaming agreements in over 120 countries – including South Africa.
Project Fi pricing
Google charges a base fee of $20 per month for unlimited US voice calls, international texts, and Wi-Fi tethering, and operates on a month-to-month basis.
International voice calls and some voice calls in the US do attract additional fees.
Mobile data can be bought for $10 per GB.
While roaming internationally, data connectivity will run on 3G networks and be limited to speeds of 256kbps.
Unused data does not expire. Instead, Google refunds you for data you do not use.
Making international voice calls while roaming on cellular networks will cost $0.20 per minute. If you call over Wi-Fi, rates vary depending on the country you’re calling. For South Africa, they are:
- Landline: $0.03 per minute
- Mobile: $0.07 per minute
- Special: $0.15 per minute
Availability
Project Fi only supports the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P, and requires that you have a Google Account in the US to sign up.
“It works with the Project Fi SIM card, which supports multiple cellular networks,” said Google.
