How Cell C showed a massive network improvement

Cell C’s network has shown a massive improvement over the last year, which is a result of a big investment from the company.

MyBroadband’s latest network tests showed that Cell C’s average download speed in Gauteng improved from 4Mbps to 19Mbps. Upload speeds increased from 2.6Mbps to 8.9Mbps.

Cell C’s network reliability and LTE coverage were also much better than before, as illustrated by the company outperforming Vodacom, MTN, and Telkom in a drive test in Gauteng.

How Cell C improved its network

Cell C completed a RAN Swap project in November 2015, where equipment was standardized on close to 2,300 sites across the country.

The project has improved the stability of the network, said Cell C.

“According to our own metrics, as well as customer feedback, these enhancements have increased quality on our network significantly.”

The improved performance is also thanks to Cell C’s roll-out of LTE across major South African cities, which it said is progressing well.

Cell C currently has a 1,652 LTE sites on air, with close to 700 additional LTE sites going live by May.

Cell C said its network investment continues, and additional 3G roll-out as well as optimisation and performance improvements are ongoing.

“Over the next few months, Cell C will turn its optimisation focus onto the KwaZulu-Natal region to bring the customer network experience to the same level as in Gauteng and the Western Cape,” said Cell C.

Cell C said similar network improvement projects are also underway in smaller regions.
