MTN online bill platform back up after data leak

MTN’s billing platform service has been restored after the system was taken offline following reports that clients could access one another’s bills.

A subscriber told MyBroadband that he logged into MTN’s e-billing site, received a one-time PIN, and accessed the client portal.

When he tried to download his invoices, he was shown the names, numbers, and bills of other customers.

To find his bill, he had to use the browser’s search feature to look for his number – wading through the bills of other subscribers which contained personal information.

MTN reacted to the report by shutting down its online bill platform, saying investigations were underway to ascertain the cause.

“MTN apologises unreservedly to affected customers for any inconvenience this may have caused,” said Benjamin Marais, MTN SA CIO.
