WhatsApp calling growth flat
WhatApp calling was launched in early 2015, and with millions of WhatsApp users in South Africa many people predicted it could hurt mobile voice revenues.
This did not happen. According to Vodacom’s latest figures, the company has seen little growth in WhatsApp calling on its network in recent months.
Vodacom’s annual results show its personalised “Just 4 You” offers, part of its wider pricing transformation strategy, assisted in improving voice revenue trends.
The effective price per minute on Vodacom’s network was also reduced by 16.9%, which made traditional mobile voice more attractive.
“Given that WhatsApp calling has seen little growth on our network in recent times, it follows it has had little impact on traditional voice revenue,” said Vodacom.
