Data bundle pricing comparison: Cell C hits back
Cell C launched its new 21 Mbps HSPA+ network in Gauteng on 17 November, coinciding with the company’s nine year anniversary.
Cell C also launched its new prepaid and postpaid data bundles at the event with the following pricing: R50 for 100MB, R100 for 250MB, R150 for 500MB, R250 for 1GB and R400 for 2GB.
These data bundle prices are competitive on the low end, but consumers made it clear that they expected more from Cell C on the high end where they were more expensive than Vodacom and MTN.
Cell C was quick to take the recommendations from consumers to heart, and decided to boost their 1GB and 2GB data bundles to 1.2GB and 3GB respectively. This means that Cell C’s data bundle pricing is now the most aggressive in the country with per-MB prices as low as 13c.

These data bundles complement Cell C’s other aggressively priced mobile broadband offerings, including its data stick bundles and its recently launched mobile broadband contract offerings.
Cell C’s promotional prepaid broadband packages are as follows:
- For R1,499 you will get a modem capable of speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 2GB of data every month for a period of 12 months.
- For R2,999 you will get a modem capable of speeds of up to 21.6Mbps and 5GB of data every month for a period of 12 months.
Cell C complimented its prepaid pricing by launching an accompanying twelve month contract a few weeks ago with pricing that is significantly cheaper than Vodacom, MTN and the newly launched 8ta.
- The first package offers a modem capable of speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 2GB of data per month for R149 per month.
- The second package offers a modem capable of speeds of up to 21Mbps and 5GB of data per month for R299 per month.
Consumers can also purchase twelve month prepaid data-only data bundles:
- R999 once-off for 2GB every month for 12 months
- R1,999 once-off for 5GB per month for 12 months
