MTN’s impressive coverage between Ogies and Richards Bay

MTN has 100% population coverage in South Africa, which means there are very few places where you will be left without an MTN signal.

The mobile operator has also achieved 93% 3G coverage and 43% LTE coverage, despite having to re-farm spectrum for its LTE network.

To ensure it improves its network further, MTN will invest R12 billion this year to upgrade coverage and performance.

One example of its growing coverage is inside the railway tunnels servicing the coal link between Ogies and Richards Bay.

The 580km line, which stretches from Ermelo to Richards Bay, is a channel for export coal from 44 coal mines in Mpumalanga to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

The line passes through numerous tunnels, where there was previously no cellular reception.

MTN solved the problem by installing cellular sites inside these railway tunnels.

The images below show the coal route and several of the areas where MTN provides coverage.
