Nokia hoax warning

Nokia did not participate in any lottery activities and the messages constituted a scam, the company said in a statement.

It warned of sophisticated hoaxes by a syndicate of fraudsters which requested an administration fee to collect winnings.

Nokia said the fraudsters used software which enabled them to see which handset was being used by a target. They then personalised the hoax SMS to garner a response.

This was an international scam and is not unique to Nokia.

The company warned consumers not to forward or respond to the messages.
