8ta problems being resolved: Telkom CEO

Telkom punted 8ta’s success in signing up new customers last year, revealing that they attracted 186,033 new subscribers in the first month of operations.

Since then Telkom has not been particularly forthcoming with information about 8ta, and when new Telkom CEO Pinky Moholi was asked about 8ta’s growth she would not discuss any numbers.

Moholi did however say that most of their growth is coming from the prepaid market, giving a strong indication that their growth in the contract market has been slow for 8ta.

In a recent discussion with analysts Moholi shed more light on the matter, explaining that the timing of 8ta’s launch – especially when it came to postpaid services – may have negatively impacted the company’s growth.

The new Telkom CEO explained that the November 2010 launch of postpaid services meant that they hit ‘freezes’ regarding software development for many of their distribution points.

These challenges resulted in many retailers not being able to sell postpaid 8ta products and airtime which negatively impacted both growth and revenue of the company.

Moholi explained that ‘things started picking up’ in January 2011 when the freezes were lifted, and that there are plans in place to address the shortcomings in their distribution channel and airtime availability.
