Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys revealed that they currently have 4.1 million smartphones on their network, with very strong growth expected over the next few years.
BlackBerry leads the pack with 1.6 million active devices on the Vodacom network, followed by 220,000 iPhones and around 200,000 Android devices.
Of the 220,000 iPhones on the Vodacom network, 120,000 are iPhone 4 devices while 100,000 are iPhone 3 and earlier variants.
However, South Africa is something of an anomaly in the global smartphone market. While BlackBerry sales slumped globally, local sales are as high as ever.
Since April 2011 Vodacom sold 600,000 BlackBerry phones, far higher than the 70,000 iPhones and 100,000 Android devices added over the last seven months.
iPhone and Android should however get a boost in numbers over the next few months with the launch of the iPhone 4S in South Africa and the latest Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich.
