HTC directionless
The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) was recently approached by an unhappy consumer about HTC’s packaging for the TyTN2 handset. The packaging states that the HTC Tytn2 has “Built-in GPS navigation”.
A Mr Potgieter lodged a consumer complaint against HTC, saying that to use the built-in navigation one had to buy additional software at a cost of R700. This, according to Potgieter, is misleading advertising as it is not stated clearly on the packaging.
The ASA tried to get feedback from HTC regarding this issue, but the company failed to respond.
The ASA found that the HTC Tytn2 packaging omits crucial information that would influence consumers in deciding whether to purchase the handset or not.
The authority ruled that the HTC advertisement was misleading and that the company must withdraw the packaging in its current format with immediate effect.
