Cell C hit by data breach

Cell C has disclosed that it was the victim of a cyberattack that exposed the data of a limited number of people.

The mobile network operator did not reveal further details about the breach.

“We have detected a cybersecurity incident impacting parts of our IT environment,” Cell C said.

“Upon discovery, we took immediate action to contain the issue and engaged cybersecurity experts to assist with our investigation.”

Cell C said that its top priority was to protect the integrity of its systems and the confidentiality of customer data.

“While we continue to assess the full scope of the incident, initial findings from our ongoing investigation suggest that data related to a limited number of individuals may have been accessed by an unauthorised party,” it said.

“We have notified the relevant authorities, and we will keep stakeholders informed as we work to resolve the situation.”

Cell C said that cybercrime is increasingly prevalent locally and globally, adding that was continuously investing in cybersecurity measures to mitigate risk.

“We would like to encourage our customers to stay vigilant and take steps to protect their personal information,” the company said.

It provided a link to a guide on its website that it said would help customers stay “cybersmart”.

“We remain committed to safeguarding stakeholder privacy and will provide updates as more information becomes available,” Cell C said.
