400 million SMSes per month
Vodacom recently announced its interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2008 and data growth was one of the highlights of the announcement.
Vodacom increased its data revenue, which consists of both SMS and other Internet and data products, by 43.3% over last year and it now accounts for 13.1% of Vodacom’s total service revenue.
“Vodacom’s data revenue increased mainly due to higher penetration levels and more affordable product offerings,” the company said.
Vodacom South Africa transmitted 2.4 billion SMSes over the past six months, up from 2.2 billion over the same period last year. This equates to around 400 million SMSes per month.
As at September 30 2008 the number of unique packet switched data users on Vodacom South Africa’s network was 4.3 million, while the number of unique SMS users was 9.6 million and the number of unique MMS users was 1.5 million.
The number of unique users accessing the Vodafone Live! portal during September 2008 was 1.9 million, up from 1.2 million a year ago.
“Data revenue in all countries increased substantially, reaffirming consumer demand for connectivity,” Vodacom said.
