New MTN data rates announced soon
MTN said in a press release issued today (26 February 2013) that it would soon announce data rates to make Internet connectivity “even more affordable to BlackBerry customers”.
The rest of the release dealt with the introduction of a 200MB “fair usage policy” on MTN’s R59/month BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) package, which will be renamed to “BlackBerry Absolute” from 1 March 2013.
MTN said that it will be offering an extra 200MB free to customers using more than 200MB for the first three months of the launch of Blackberry Absolute.
Once customers have depleted their data allocation, they will stay connected to BIS by either using their Internet bundle or getting charged directly from their airtime balance, MTN said.
“The BlackBerry Absolute Plan is aimed at optimising the network to make it efficient so as to provide a world-class experience for our customers,” Devan Chetty, GM of core & IP planning at MTN SA was quoted as saying.

“It is important to note that the BlackBerry Absolute Plan will not limit our customers’ experience and connectivity on their BlackBerry handsets,” Chetty added. “Our analysis of usage behaviour shows that the majority of our BlackBerry customers fall within the 200MB usage pattern on a monthly basis.”
According to Chetty, it was with this understanding in mind that they designed BlackBerry Absolute.
When asked whether existing BIS customers would be capped, Chetty said that the BlackBerry Absolute Plan will observe the expiry dates of all existing prepaid BIS recharges before it kicks in.
“MTN will honour its agreement with existing BlackBerry contract customers until the end date of their contracts, when the BlackBerry Absolute Plan will be loaded automatically upon contract renewal,” Chetty said.
New BlackBerry contracts will automatically be loaded with BlackBerry Absolute as of 1 March, Chetty said.
