iOS 7 upgrade problems: where to get help in SA
iThing owners in South Africa without access to an Internet connection with a sufficiently high cap should carefully consider how they update their Apple devices to iOS 7.
Apple released the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS, on Wednesday evening (18 September 2013).
Users are reporting that the iPhone update is in excess of 700MB and that the iPad update is at least 900MBt.
What’s worse for users in South Africa on capped connections is that there have been numerous reports of downloads failing, which then have to be restarted.
It is also understood that users would have to upgrade to iOS 6.1 (specifically 6.1.3 or 6.1.4) before they can upgrade to iOS 7.0.
For users already on iOS 6 this is a relatively small update (70MB or less), but it all adds up to a large amount of data, especially for those with multiple Apple devices.
When we asked the mobile networks on Wednesday whether they offer any kind of support to customers that need to download large updates, only Vodacom answered by the time of publication:
“We’re investigating a few options to help people with these occasional hefty updates,” a spokesperson for the operator said. “As an example, the new format stores that we’re starting to roll out will offer the ability to do these upgrades via Wi-Fi.”
Telkom Mobile also offers free Wi-Fi access at a number of locations, but the operator did not confirm whether users will be able to download their iDevice updates there.
Core Group, the official Apple distributor in South Africa, issued a press release on Thursday morning (19 September 2013) inviting iThing owners to upgrade to iOS 7 at iStores.
Those interested have to make a booking on the myistorebookings.co.za website, Core said, after which they can attend an upgrade evening on 20, or 23–27 September 2013 from 17:00–19:00.
