MTN contract builder launched
A contract builder application called “My MTNChoice” is being advertised on the MTN website.
Similar to Cell C’s “Build your own” contract option, MTN said it lets users put together a contract package that best suits their needs.
Additionally, MTN said that MTNChoice will let subscribers set usage limits and real-time notifications to alert them when they are close to their out-of-bundle spend limit.
Once the out-of-bundle usage limit is reached a subscriber must recharge to call, SMS, or use Internet services, MTN said.
According to the MTN site, subscribers build an MTNChoice contract by selecting a base package which includes either minutes or data. Bundles of minutes, SMS messages, and data may then be bolted on.

The terms and conditions on the MTN site state that the base packages are available on either 6-, 12-, 18-, or 24-month contracts.
Recurring or once-off add-on bundles may then be added to the contract, subject to certain rules.

Bundle expiry also varies depending on the bundles, as follows:
- Once-off bundles expire 2 calendar months after they are activated;
- Anytime Minute recurring bundles: carry-over limited to 5x the bundle value;
- MTN to MTN Minute recurring bundles: 5x bundle value limit; and
- SMS recurring bundles: 2x bundle value limit.
The terms & conditions also state that My MTNChoice subscribers may not opt out of SMS notifications relating to their usage limits.
In brief, these are:
- A warning when usage reaches a subscriber-defined triggering value. The default is R10 remaining.
- When the usage limit has been exhausted.
MTN was asked whether an out-of-bundle limit of R0 could be set, and whether devices are offered on MTNChoice contracts, but the company did not respond by the time of publication.
