Hetzner hacked, but SA clients not affected

Hetzner Data Transfer

Summary:  There was a security breach of German-based Hetzner Online’s systems this week, but Hetzner South Africa was not affected by the intrusion

Hetzner Online (based in Germany) informed their customers this week (5 October 2011) of a security breach of their systems.

“As far as we can presently reconstruct, the attackers could have been able to access internal customer data on Hetzner Online’s administrative systems,” Hetzner Online told their subscribers via e-mail.

Hetzner said that they have “no information regarding data abuse from customers”, but still advised their users to change all passwords on the Hetzner system as a precaution.

The good news for South African Hetzner subscribers is that they are not affected by the attack.

“We do not share a database or code repository with Hetzner Online and as such we have not been affected by the compromise,” Hetzner SA said.

“Access to hosts on the Hetzner Online network which belong to us, are securely locked down and is managed in its entirety by Hetzner SA. No Hetzner SA customer data or servers have been compromised.”
