The bug-zapping laser
An American company is looking to take on unwanted bugs with what it calls the Photonic Fence.
Intellectual Ventures Lab has been working on the device since 2009, according to a report by Wired.
The device is currently undergoing its first real-world test with the US Department of Agriculture, and will be sold to farmers if it works as intended.
The Photonic Fence uses cameras and other optic devices to scan for bugs within 100m, analysing a target’s form, velocity, and wing beat to recognise which creature it is.
Certain pests can be placed on a “kill list”, and when identified will be shot with a laser. The target is dead within 25 milliseconds.
The company said the device can kill 20 insects per second, covering an area of 30m wide by 3m high.
