iPhone 4S in SA

Apple iPhone 4S

Earlier today (11 November 2011) Apple announced that they launched the iPhone 4S in 15 new countries, including Hong Kong and South Korea.

When Apple first announced the iPhone 4S in October 2011, they revealed plans for three launch waves. The first included 7 countries, the second 22, and the third wave would see the device available in more than 70 countries before the end of the year.

It is widely anticipated that South Africa would form part of this final wave for 2011, but it isn’t known exactly when the local launch will be.

Neither MTN nor Vodacom, which both sold the iPhone 4, were able to provide firm launch dates for the iPhone 4S, with MTN’s general manager of products, services and innovation, Mike Fairon, saying that they would “communicate any developments in this regard in due course. All media enquiries should kindly be directed to Apple.”

However, industry sources previously confirmed that a 2011 launch for the iPhone 4S in SA is likely.

This was confirmed by Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys at the 2011 MyBroadband conference. Uys was asked when they would launch the iPhone 4S, and he answered that he expected it to be available before the end of the year.

Cell C and 8ta were asked whether they would be also have the iPhone 4S available on their networks, but were unable to confirm or deny it.
