New Kindle Paperwhite e-book reader unveiled

Amazon has introduced its 6th generation Kindle, named the Paperwhite, in Wi-Fi ( $119.00) and 3G ($189.00) versions. The e-book reader is available to purchase through the Amazon webstore.

“Kindle is the best-selling e-reader in the world for six years running,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “No one is investing on behalf of readers or pushing the boundaries of hardware, software and content for readers like this team.”

In terms of content, Amazon boasts of their ever-expanding library. Over 400,000 books are exclusive to the Kindle Store. Over a million titles are $4.99 or less, over 1.7 million are $9.99 or less.

The new version of the e-book reader carries the following features:

  • New display technology with higher contrast: 6-inch with Carta e-paper technology. 212 ppi, optimized fonts, 16-level gray scale.
  • Size: 6.7″ x 4.6″ x 0.36″ (169 mm x 117 mm x 9.1 mm).
  • Weight: 7.3 ounces (206 grams).
  • Device Storage: 2 GB internal (approximately 1.25 GB available for user content). Holds up to 1,100 books.
  • Cloud Storage: Free cloud storage for all Amazon content
  • Battery Life claim: A single charge lasts up to eight weeks, based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at 10. Battery life will vary based on light and wireless usage.
  • Charge Time: Fully charges in approximately 4 hours from a computer via USB cable
  • 3G Connectivity: HSDPA modem (3G) with a fallback to EDGE/GPRS; uses Amazon Whispernet to provide wireless coverage via AT&T’s 3G high-speed data network in the U.S. and partner networks outside of the U.S.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Supports 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n standard with support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security using password authentication or Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
  • Content Formats Supported: Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion

The 6th-gen Kindle Paperwhite also has some new software features:

  • Kindle Page Flip: Skim page-by-page, scan by chapter, or skip to the end of a book without losing your place.

  • Goodreads Integration: Join over 20 million other readers and see what your friends are reading, share highlights, and rate the books you read with Goodreads on Kindle, available exclusively from Amazon.
  • Kindle FreeTime: Parental controls have been extended to give parents a simple, engaging way to encourage kids to spend more time reading. Hand-select books for your kids to read, and hand out achievement badges when they hit reading milestones. A progress report keeps parents updated on total time spent reading, number of words looked up, badges earned and books finished.
  • Vocabulary Builder: Compiles words you look up in the dictionary into an easy-to-access list. Use these lists to quiz yourself with flashcards and see words in context.
  • Smart Lookup: Integrates a full dictionary definition with other reference information about a word, character, topic or book via X-Ray and Wikipedia.
