nVidia teases new mobile technology
In the run up to the Consumer Electronics Show, Nvidia has decided to post a blog update on one of their new technology projects.
Spokesperson Rene Haas has revealed that Nvidia plans to release a new technology designed to work on notebook platforms with Nvidia GPUs. The technology is named Optimus and will be officially released sometime in Q1 2010.
“It is seamless and transparent to the user. Its purpose is to optimize the mobile experience by letting the user get the performance of discrete graphics from a notebook while still delivering great battery life,” said Haas.
It is currently unclear whether the Optimus technology will see the introduction of a new range of Nvidia mobile chipsets, or if it will be a software update that manages power consumption and performance.
Consumers are bound to be interested in the promise of enhanced performance and prolonged battery life. More details are expected to emerge in February.
This may be an attempt by Nvidia to refresh their aging mobile GPUs as they are currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Intel which is preventing them from developing any new mainboard chipsets that support the Intel Core iX range of CPUs. Not being legally able to provide graphics chipsets that support the new processors will certainly prove detrimental to their GPU business if the issue remains locked in the courts.
