Monstrous 16TB solid state drive from Samsung
Samsung has unveiled a 16TB solid state hard drive at the Flash Memory Summit in California, Ars Technica reported.
Called the Samsung PM1633a, the new drive has a capacity of 15.36TB and is based on the company’s recently-announced 256 Gigabit, three-dimensional Vertical NAND flash memory chips.
Ars Technica noted that the largest mechanical hard drives made by Seagate and Western Digital currently offer capacities of around 10TB.
No price for the new SSD has been announced yet, though Samsung said it is aimed at the enterprise sector.
According to reports, Samsung showed off a server with 48 of these drives in it. Boasting a total storage capacity of 768TB, the server measured its performance at 2,000,000 input/output operations per second.
