LED, 3D, multiples of HD: What does 2011 hold for monitors and TVs?

Today Samsung SA announced that they would be bringing 23” and 27” 3D LED displays to South Africa in the second quarter of 2011.

For those who have been struggling to get their hands on 26 to 28-inch LED computer monitors locally this announcement might be just what they were waiting for. Some do worry about the premium that might be payable for the 3D functionality when all they want is a 2D LED monitor in that size, however.

Not to mention the fact that one of the technologies that got a lot of coverage at CES this year is glasses-free 3D technology. Many consumers would be wary of buying into a 3D technology that could be obsolete by next year.

Other than LED and 3D technology coming to the higher-end consumer monitors, manufacturers in South Africa have hinted at higher resolution displays that could be coming to monitors and TVs this year.

Beyond HD

AMD Radeon fans may already be familiar with the company’s Eyefinity technology which allows one to connect 3 or 6 monitors to a PC and use it as a single display.

Apple Cinema monitors have been running at resolutions four times (or slightly more) than that of 720p HD for some time now, joined by manufacturers such as Dell and NEC.

Samsung plans to have screens running at quadruple 720p resolution in 2011.

“We are currently in the process of developing a 2560×1440 screen which may be available later this year,” said Bennie Budler, product manager of IT products at Samsung South Africa.

Budler couldn’t say what physical sizes the monitor would be available in or what kind of graphical hardware would be required to drive the monitor, but revealed that the plan is to launch them towards the end of Q3 2011.

Cliff Cargeege, Africa business manager consultant at Toshiba, predicts that 4k2k panels will appear in 55” and larger size televisions by the end of 2011.

“4k2k” refers to the approximate number of horizontal and vertical pixels on such high-resolution displays with a typical resolution of 4,096 x 2,160.

Based on the inputs from Budler and Cargeege it would seem that 2011 will be a year of not just pushing 3D technology, but of getting very high resolution displays into the homes of consumers.
