Google, IBM in new open interface to take on Intel
Google, IBM, and seven other technology companies have joined forces to take on Intel with an open specification that increases data centre performance ten-fold, Reuters reported.
The new standard is called Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (OpenCAPI), and aims to provide a high-bandwidth, low-latency interface design specification.
OpenCAPI is expected to speed up workloads in big data, machine learning, and analytics in corporate and cloud data centres.
AMD, Dell EMC, HP, Mellanox Technologies, Micron Technology, Nvidia, and Xilinx are also members of the OpenCAPI consortium,
Intel has decided to sit out of the new consortium, and has previously stayed away from open standards technology groups such as CCIX and Gen-Z.
The consortium said it plans to make its specification available before the end of the year, with servers and products based on the new standard coming in the second half of 2017.
