Micron set to launch GDDR6 graphics memory
Micron announced it aims to launch its next-generation GDDR6 VRAM before the end of 2017, PCWorld reports.
The company said its upcoming GDDR6 memory will be significantly faster than the GDDR5 and GDDR5X VRAM in current graphics cards.
GDDR6 will have a data transfer rate of up to 16Gbps, twice as fast as standard GDDR5 memory.
While the new memory will initially be used in consumer graphics, GDDR6 will also be used in high-performance machine-learning computers and network switches and routers.
Samsung and SK Hynix are also working on a new iteration of HBM2 graphics memory – which delivers high-end performance, but is more expensive than GDDR VRAM.
Micron said GDDR6 memory is aimed at mainstream computing and users seeking low-latency, high-bandwidth memory for gaming PCs and consoles.
