IBM opens JHB cloud centre
IBM today launched the Africa Innovation Centre, home of Africa’s first cloud computing centre. In cloud computing, dynamically-shared computing resources are virtualised and accessed as a service, making it a particularly attractive proposition for small to large-sized companies in Africa.
The new centre, based at the company’s Sandton offices, will be a showcase for new and open technologies including cloud computing, Web 2.0, service-oriented architecture, and systems management. It will also demonstrate next generation banking systems and environmentally-friendly computing designs.
The intention of the centre is to encourage entrepreneurship and growth in the region by making resources available to business partners, software start-ups, IT professionals and academia.
The Innovation Centre is one of a number of investments IBM has made into local technology centres, including a R12 million Blue Gene supercomputer to be donated to the Meraka Centre for High Performance Computing. Last year the company also opened a business continuity an recovery service centre in Cresta.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the centre, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said IBM’s initiative "directly responds to our call for increased private sector investment into sustainable initiatives that advance priority technical skills."
