New Mac Pro details revealed
Apple revealed a number of new details for the upcoming Mac Pro at an event in San Francisco, California on Tuesday, 22 October 2013. It first teased the new PC at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2013.
Senior vice-president of worldwide marketing at Apple, Phil Schiller, announced that the new Mac Pro would be available before the end of the year, and would start at a price point of $2,999 in the US.
The base model features a 3.7GHz quad-core Xeon processor, 12GB RAM, dual D300 FirePro graphics with 2GB of RAM each, and a 256GB SSD.
Schiller explained that the Mac Pro can use Intel Xeon E5 processors in 4, 6, 8, or 12 core versions, and can have up to 64GB 1,866MHz DDR3 RAM.
It’s the first Mac to come standard with dual workstation graphics processing units and can support up to 12GB of video RAM.
The new Mac Pro has up to 7 Teraflops of compute-power, Schiller said, and includes next-generation PCI Express flash with support for 1.2GB/s reads and 1.0GB/s writes.
With the new Thunderbolt 2 ports, the Mac Pro supports single- and dual-input displays, and can drive up to three 4K displays, Schiller said.
He added that its HDMI 1.4 port also supports 4K TVs.
