Hall of Shame: SA’s biggest spammers

The Internet Service Providers’ Association of South Africa (ISPA) released its first ‘Hall of Shame’ report in September 2008, naming and shaming the country’s top spammers.

The spam Hall of Shame is hosted on the ISPA website as a constantly updated resource listing known South African spammers. “It will be accessible to all ISPA members and will help them to identify and take action against spammers, so that they can conserve their bandwidth and protect their customers against unsolicited electronic messages,” ISPA said at the launch of the program.

With reports that an average of 84.4% of the total volume of email traffic worldwide is spam it’s easy to see that spam remains a huge problem.

The increase in spam originating in South Africa prompted ISPA to not only name and shame spammers, but also unscrupulous email database sellers. “A handful of prolific email address database sellers are playing a major role in the deluge of spam in South Africa,” said ISPA’s Rob Hunter.

The latest ISPA Hall of Shame contains the names of now notorious spammers as well as newcomers in the local spam arena.
