BitTorrent use does not equal piracy: ISP
ISP Cox Communications has filed court documents in which it argues that the use of BitTorrent does not equal copyright infringement.
BMG Rights Management and Round Hill Music sued Cox Communications in 2014 for failing to cancel user accounts which frequently pirated content.
Cox Communications hit back, saying that the evidence gathered by the music copyright companies cannot be trusted.
It said the use of BitTorrent is not proof of any infringement, and that music companies should provide direct proof that Cox subscribers pirated their work if they want action taken against them.
“Plaintiffs cannot escape their burden to prove specific infringements of their copyrighted works on Cox’s network by using BitTorrent activity as a proxy for infringement,” the ISP said.
