Google's Groupon competitor to come to SA?

Early Friday morning Mashable reported that Google is preparing to launch Google Offers, a direct competitor for Groupon.

Google tried to acquire Groupon some months ago, but the daily deal site famously declined the US$6 billion deal.

Groupon also announced just over a week ago that they had acquired daily deal sites SoSasta in India, Grouper in Israel and Twangoo South Africa. Twangoo, which seems to be hosted in France, was selected as it has grown to serve the most South African cities according to Groupon.

While Google has been mum on where it plans to roll out its service, a Google spokesperson gave us the following statement when asked about their plans for South Africa.

“Google is communicating with small businesses to enlist their support and participation in a test of a pre-paid offers/vouchers program. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new products, such as the recent Offer Ads beta, that connect businesses with customers in new ways. We do not have more details to share at this time, but will keep you posted.”

The observant may notice that it’s the same statement that was sent to Mashable earlier today, so there’s no confirmation (or denial) on whether the service will compete with Groupon in South Africa.
