Facebook explains what clickbait headlines really are

Facebook Dislike

Clickbait has become a term which is often used incorrectly, and Facebook has now provided a clear description of what it defines as clickbait.

“We can now better detect different kinds of clickbait headlines by separately identifying signals that withhold or exaggerate information,” said Facebook.

Facebook described clickbait headlines as those that withhold information intentionally, leave out crucial details, or mislead people – such as:

When She Looked Under Her Couch Cushions And Saw THIS…

It said clickbait headlines also exaggerate the details of a story with sensational language:

WOW! Ginger tea is the secret to everlasting youth. You’ve GOT to see this!

Facebook said it is fighting clickbait articles on its platform through a comprehensive identification process.

It has categorised thousands of headlines as clickbait if they fall into these descriptions, and identified which phrases are commonly used in clickbait headlines

This is similar to how many email spam filters work.

Posts with clickbait headlines will appear lower in a user’s News Feed.
