Meta pushing Threads posts to Facebook feeds with no opt-out
Meta Platforms has started promoting its Twitter (now X) competitor on Facebook by cross-posting Threads posts to users’ Facebook feeds.
This is according to the company’s response to a post from a Threads user who asked how they could prevent this from happening.
“We’ve launched an update to make it easier for people to see the latest content from Threads directly on Facebook and Instagram,” it said.
“But we’re listening to feedback like yours as we continue to build on this.”
Meta likely launched the update to improve growth on Threads, with the platform bleeding users after an impressive launch.
Daily active users on the Threads Android app declined from 49.3 million on 7 July 2023 to 10.3 million by 7 August 2023 — a decline of 79%.
The US was among the highest in engagement following Threads’ launch, but users had dropped from 2.3 million to 576,000 over the same period.
This was despite the platform rapidly accumulating new users within days of its launch.
Instagram launched Threads, an app designed as a direct rival to Twitter, on 6 July 2023; user sign-ups had reached more than 30 million within a day.
Threads lets users sign up with their Instagram accounts, making getting started on the platform easier.
Just four days later, Threads had amassed 100 million sign-ups. Moreover, Threads had not yet been released in Europe, one of Meta’s most significant markets.
