SA Internet pirate case delayed: report
The case of one Mr. M Norton, the first person arrested on charges relating to online piracy in South Africa, has been transferred to the Special Commercial Crimes Court in Belville, Htxt is reporting.
According to the report, the next hearing is scheduled for 26 February 2014.
MyBroadband first reported on Norton’s arrest in December 2013, when the CEO of the Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (Safact), Corné Guldenpfennig, told MyBroadband that this would be the first case of its sort in South Africa.
Guldenpfennig said that they would bring charges against Norton in terms of the Counterfeit Goods Act and article 27 of the Copyright Act for uploading a high-profile South African film via The Pirate Bay.
Although the film Norton stands accused of distributing has not been officially named, MyBroadband has good reason to believe that the pirated film in question is Four Corners.
Four Corners is described as a “coming-of-age gang film set in the Cape Flats”. It has also been announced by the National Film and Video Foundation as South Africa’s official entry into the 86th annual Academy Awards (Oscars) for best foreign language film.
The film was originally set to release on 7 February 2014, but the launch of the film was delayed for the second time recently and is currently set for general release in South Africa on 28 March 2014.
