Checkers Sixty60 app changes

Checkers has started launching its revamped on-demand delivery app, Sixty60, for Android users, enabling these customers to shop more than 10,000 Checkers Hyper products.
The company started beta testing the updated app with some users in certain parts of Cape Town in May 2024.
Its new app allows users in the area to shop for products like camping and outdoor gear, small appliances, baby products, toys, and kitchen and home electronics.
A MyBroadband reader in Johannesburg noticed that the Checkers Sixty60 app on their Android device had been updated. They can now buy Checkers Hyper products and access the app’s new features.
The update doesn’t appear to have made it to iOS as yet.
The revamped app includes various user interface design changes, including the addition of a Checkers Hyper delivery timeslot indicator, various colour changes, and a redesigned user profile menu.
It also now has a menu item on the homepage that says “Sixty60 Goes Hyper”, giving users easy access to the catalogue of Checkers Hyper products available through the app.
These products include air fryers, camping equipment, coffee machines, garden supplies like seeds and tools, and pool care products.
Checkers has also added new delivery vans to its fleet to facilitate delivery of the larger Checkers Hyper items ordered through the on-demand delivery app.
The South African retail giant is confident that the new version of the app will further disrupt the country’s online retail market.
“Our precision delivery promise means no more waiting at home all day for your general merchandise order to arrive,” said Shoprite strategy and innovation chief Neil Schreuder.
“Customers can now choose the 60-minute time slot in which they’d like their Hyper delivery to arrive, with the same to-the-minute driver tracking they’ve become accustomed to on their grocery orders.”
Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht first mentioned the company’s plans to revamp the platform during an earnings call on its interim results for the half-year ended 31 December 2023.
“In terms of further development. Yes, we consistently will continue to develop Sixty60,” he said. “We are currently busy rewriting the platform.”
The CEO explained that Sixty60’s logistics management approach sets it apart from competitors like Amazon and Takealot. He added that it is one of the primary reasons behind Sixty60 being “very profitable”.
“We have this very large footprint of stores that we use as micro fulfilment centres as opposed to a very expensive single dark distribution centre,” said Engelbrecht.
“I know there are people who don’t believe it, but believe me — it is very profitable.”

Shoprite raking it in with Checkers Sixty60
The Checkers Sixty60 app has been immensely popular in South Africa. Having launched during the Covid-19 pandemic, many believed its popularity would wane once the associated lockdowns ended.
However, it has shown significant growth since. Its latest annual results show strong sales growth through Checkers Sixty60 and the service’s significantly expanded coverage.
Shoprite last reported that Checkers Sixty60 was available through 505 of its stores across the country in December 2023. It has added 34 stores in eight months, bringing the total to 539 locations.
Year-on-year, Shoprite added 73 stores to Sixty60’s footprint. Sales through the on-demand delivery platform grew by 58.1% during the financial year.
While this was down from the 81.5% growth it reported the year before, Sixty60 sales contributed significantly to the Shoprite Group’s overall sales growth of 12% to R240.7 billion.
