Uber acid attack suspect arrested
Police have arrested a suspect in the attack on cab driver Kgomotso Tiro, said Uber.
Tiro was attacked by a person who booked a trip from Sophiatown to Northcliff through Uber.
The assailant poured acid onto Tiro, resulting in severe burns to his face, neck, and hands.
Tiro said Uber paid R39,000 into the bank account of his brother, who owns the cab, and it was “not a lot of money” that he plans to return.
Uber said the suspect will appear in court on 24 August, but could not share any further details pertaining to the investigation.
It added that there is no evidence to suggest the attack was related to meter taxi intimidation, however, and the Uber platform allows it to track criminal incidents.
Uber then provides the data to law enforcement officials.
