Why Gmail crashed
A Google engineer has chimed in on the reasons for the crashes the Gmail and Chrome experienced on Monday, 11 December 2012.
A company engineer, Tim Steele, spoke to the community on the Google forums and explained that, in spite of the apparent link between Gmail’s outage and Chrome crashes, it was a problem with Google Sync that pulled the services down.
Google Sync keeps Chrome’s browser, bookmarks, extensions, apps and settings in sync; but a back-end failure caused the browser and Gmail to crash in a domino effect.
“That change was to a core piece of infrastructure that many services at Google depend on. This means other services may have been affected at the same time, leading to the confounding original title of this bug,” added Steele.
