New secure email protocol – SMTP STS

Email

Independent security researchers and major Silicon Valley companies have developed a new encrypted email protocol, called SMTP STS.

SMTP STS is a mechanism that enables mail service providers to:

  • Declare their ability to receive TLS-secured connections
  • Declare particular methods for certificate validation
  • Request sending SMTP servers to report upon and/or refuse to deliver messages that cannot be delivered securely.

According to Softpedia, the new SMTP STS extension looks like the HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) extension to HTTPS.

“Just like HSTS, SMTP STS brings message confidentiality and server authenticity to the process of starting an encrypted email communications channel,” said Softpedia.

“SMTP STS will work alongside SMTP STARTTLS to strengthen SMTP and to avoid SSL/TLS downgrades and MitM attacks, just like HSTS works alongside HTTPS to strengthen HTTP.”
