For 30 years there was no need for secure mail protocol. It was PGP, but nobody used it, so NSA was happy. Now when small apps are exchanging mail in secure way, they want to make Email secure? I don't believe...

Google, MS and Yahoo are all large email providers. It is in their best interest to combat spam and make email a better place to be. They also spearheaded efforts like SPF, DKIM, DMARC, etc, which gives the domain owner some protection.
