Security warning issued over Android VPNs

Security researchers have issued a warning over multiple VPN apps available from Google Play.

According to a report by TorrentFreak, the researchers stated that 38% of the apps tested “contained some kind of malware”.

67% featured at least one third-party tracking library, and more than 80% leaked IPv6 traffic.

The hundreds of “all-in-one” VPN apps available on Google’s Play store which were investigated by CSIRO’s Data 61 “presented significant security issues”, according to the report.

“The researchers found that among the 283 apps tested, even the highest-ranked and most-downloaded apps can carry nasty surprises.”

The malware discovered included adware, trojans, malvertising, riskware, and spyware.
