Crackdown on Internet tech support scams

The Federal Trade Commission in the US has launched a legal campaign aimed at taking down online “tech support” fraud.

Operation Tech Trap will tackle the scammers behind the online pop-ups and phone calls used to trick users into using falling for “tech support help”.

The operation has laid charges against seven people, two of whom have pleaded guilty.

“Tech support scams prey on consumers’ legitimate concerns about malware, viruses, and other cyber threats. The FTC is proud to work with partners to take down these scams,” said the FTC.

The FTC has also published an updated section on its website which deals with how to identify tech support scams and avoid becoming a victim.
