Apple explains why it removed VPN apps in China
Apple has issued a statement following the removal of VPN apps from the App Store in China, TechCrunch reports.
The company said it removed the apps to comply with government regulations requiring VPN applications to be explicitly licensed.
The Chinese government is known for censoring Internet access using numerous policies and restrictions, which comprise its “Great Firewall”.
VPN applications have proven popular in China as they can circumvent this censorship.
“Earlier this year, China’s MIIT announced that all developers offering VPNs must obtain a licence from the government,” said Apple.
“We have been required to remove some VPN apps in China that do not meet the new regulations.”
Apple said VPN apps will remain available in all other markets where it does business.
