Journalists arrested over phone hacking

Four British journalists and former journalists were Thursday arrested as part of an investigation into illegal phone-hacking, police said.

The scandal, which peaked in 2011, led to the closure of one newspaper, the launch of a judicial probe into media regulation, and has put pressure on the media empire of Rupert Murdoch, whose newspapers were those mainly involved.

The three men and one woman arrested on Thursday were all current or former employees of the Mirror Group, which publishes the Mirror and Sunday Mirror.

Among them was the editor of the Sunday People newspaper, James Scott, the Guardian reported, which would make him the first serving editor to be detained in the affair.

The alleged offences date back to 2003-04, police said.
