Nokia X, X+ entry-level Android smartphone official
Nokia has officially confirmed its much-rumoured entry-level Android device range, announcing three devices in the Nokia X range from its stage at Mobile World Congress on Monday, 24 February 2014.
The three devices unveiled by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop are the Nokia X, Nokia X+, and Nokia XL.
Both devices are based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), but while most Android devices take people to Google’s cloud, Elop said the Nokia X will take people to Microsoft’s cloud.
For example, instead of Google’s applications, the Nokia X range will include Here Maps, Nokia Mix Radio, and Microsoft OneDrive (with 10GB of free storage).
Elop also announced that features such as operator billing, which lets users in certain markets (such as South Africa) buy content with airtime, will also come to the Nokia X.
Users will be able to get apps from Nokia’s stores as well as third-party stores. While not specifically mentioned, Google Play is not expected to be available to Nokia X devices.
The Nokia X was rumoured to have the following hardware specifications:
- Processor: 1GHz Dual-core Snapdragon;
- Display: 4″ WVGA
- RAM: 512MB
- Internal storage: 4GB (+microSD),
- Rear camera: 5MP
- Battery capacity: 1500mAh
Elop confirmed the 4-inch display for the Nokia X and X+, noting that the X+ would feature larger internal storage and microSD support, which the Nokia X would not.
The Nokia X will be available immediately starting in emerging markets for €89, while the Nokia X+ and Nokia XL are set to launch early in the second quarter of 2014.
Elop said that the Nokia X+ would retail for €99, while the Nokia XL has a recommended retail price of €109.
