OpenOffice in Afrikaans

Translate.org.za has recently released local language versions of OpenOffice.org which give users a full set of office tools including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool and a drawing application.

The OpenOffice.org interface has been fully translated into Afrikaans and Northern Sotho from the original English and the software includes spell checkers in all three of the languages. This means that users that don’t want to or can’t speak English can use all of the OpenOffice.org programs in their native language.

The all-in-one OpenOffice.org suite includes:

  1. Writer, a full-featured word processor for writing and editing all documents, from letters to academic dissertations;
  2. Calc, an easy-to-use yet powerful spreadsheet that can be used by home users and professionals alike to crunch all the numbers they need to;
  3. Impress, a multimedia presentation tools which includes clip-art, animation and special effects; and
  4. Draw, a full-featured graphics package that can be used to create everything from  a quick diagram to a complex industrial drawing.

Dwayne Bailey, managing director of Translate.org.za, says that OpenOffice.org offers a high-end set of tools that has been proven around the world. “OpenOffice.org has been in development for more than 10 years and is now used widely around the world by home users, businesses and governments alike.”

OpenOffice.org is fully compatible with all popular document formats including Microsoft Word and Excel files. OpenOffice.org’s default file format is the SABS-approved OpenDocument Format which is a global open standard that makes it simple to share documents and collaborate with colleagues.

OpenOffice.org also supports numerous other common formats including .docx, text, HTML and rich text format and can open and edit all Word, Powerpoint and Excel files with ease.  PDF support is built-in so users are able to export files directly to PDF without needing and additional program as well as edit PDF documents.

The OpenOffice.org package, which costs R385, includes all three language versions in one pack and users are able to switch to their preferred language once it is running.

OpenOffice.org runs on both the Windows and Mac OS X platforms and is available from the Translate.org.za website. The release is compatible with all current releases of Windows including XP, Vista and Windows 7.
